Elizabeth Gibbons – Art of the Creative Mystic – March 2014

E Gibbons 1Art of the Creative Mystic is the Special Exhibit for March.  Artist Elizabeth Gibbons will be available on Sunday March 2 to introduce you to her work at the artist’s reception.  Enjoy the wine and finger foods while you enter the mystic creations of the artist.

AWE Gallery is open every Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 noon to 5:00 PM.  Also by appointment (call Stacy at 415-265-8237).

Elizabeth Gibbons has developed her unique style by combining a variety of methods and techniques.   As both creator and alchemist, she starts with the lead of her everyday existence and transforms it into the gold of spiritual enlightenment through the process of creating art.

Elizabeth states; “Art is how I make sense of it all and how I illumine my life. My art contacts the viewer at the level of the soul and inspires them to connect more deeply with their own soul.”

E Gibbons 2Gibbons focuses  on the magical, the mystical and the mysterious.  Intrigued by objects, colors or symbols, they often inspire her direction.  She incorporates reflective materials as they represent the constant change and motion which are symbolic of life’s transience. Her exploration of archetypes, symbols and materials make her art both personal and universal.

Gibbons says, “I am drawn to themes of transfiguration out of this world, to  transformation and  metamorphosis.  The longing for transcendence from spiritual imprisonment is a subject matter which permeates my art.”

Her art for sale  includes art prints, poetry art prints, giclee on canvas and original paintings.

Who We Are
September 11 2001 hearts and lives were broken, our emotional reference system to what makes our world make sense…fractured at best. On September 12, 2001, SF Peace and Hope was born.

For me, this experience is like being in the desert without visual anchors; a stark, solitary confinement of too much illogical space and suddenly out of a mysterious pocket of earth is a peacock. He fluffs his feathers up high and wide. He shows us our humanity and our beauty in the midst of dust and death.

The eyes of the peacock’s feathers are said to be the symbol of eternal life; renewal, the eyes of the stars seeing us in our—in the words of Al Young—”deathless truths”. The poems in SF Peace and Hope are those stars beaded into the large plume of humanity—they say simply, ‘we are bigger than politics and even death, we have the strength of a renewing spirit’. – Niya C. Reception Sunday February 2, 1 to 4 pm
Artist’s Discussion February 23 2:00pm

Roxanne2Affinities is a collaborative photo show. It is a playful and challenging exhibit, conceived as an experiment in image presentation-an alternative to traditional gallery image sequencing and placement.  Each artist’s works are intermingled in carefully assembled groups, rather than presented as five distinct series of single pieces. The goal was to create new entities-grouped pieces-by attending to the affinities between adjacent photos.

Featured artists:  Roxanne Worthington, Kay Taneyhill, Linda Fitch, Charlotte Kay, Adrienne Defendi

Illuminata, a group of five photographers, meet to pursue their passion for photography by sharing work and ideas, visiting galleries, producing photography shows and supporting one another’s individual efforts.

From the Seattle Times:  “One of the Northwest’s most revered artists — and certainly the most legendary — Graves spent the last 35 years of his life at The Lake, this remote 195-acre estate in Loleta, Calif. Graves died here in May at the age of 90 and set off a tsunami of nostalgia for the glory days of Northwest art, the days when the Museum of Modern Art and its employees bought up Graves paintings by the dozens and Life magazine made famous “The Mystic Painters of the Northwest.” A charismatic personality and world-renowned artist, Graves lived a life that vacillated between the utter seclusion of his several forest abodes and a glamorous dalliance with the cream of international society.

In the Northwest, Graves became as famous for the amazing houses he built as for his introspective paintings. But few ever saw these places, and the public was generally excluded. At the California home that was his last, Graves maintained a heavy veil of secrecy. Stories abound about his reclusiveness.”

AWE Gallery is open every Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 noon to 5:00 PM.  The work of the collective of 6 artists in the main gallery is also always changing so drop by and enjoy lots of wonderful art.  (Free parking at herchurch, the purple church).
