Mother Nature’s Surprises and Splendor – June Show

Mother Nature in Photos by Phyllis Bonner is on exhibit for the month of June at the A Woman’s Eye Gallery Annex.  The Artist reception and conversation is Saturday June 1.  Drop by any time from noon – 5:00 PM.

Phyllis 1At 88 years of age, Phyllis Bonner packs a great deal of experience  behind her debut exhibit at AWE Gallery.

Her childhood years playing with dad’s enlarger, her years traveling with the circus, the chronicles of her son’s baby steps and her film records of world-wide destinations all are prologue to this neatly distilled show.

Phyllis Bonner learned about the digital world and the digital darkroom ten years ago at the age of 78. She ventured into the world of flowers, then fruits and vegetables.  She discovered the beauty of the close-up. This exhibit is full of surprising beauty as she explores our natural world with her experienced eyes.

She is the “Grandma Moses” to digital photography and photographic art!

No better way to honor our elders than to view, appreciate, listen to and engage with their art!  Have a glass of wine/nectar in celebration.

AWE Gallery is open every Saturday and Sunday from noon – 5:00 PM and is located at 678 Portola Dr.  It is next to the purple church (north/east side).  Use the church parking lot at Portola and Sydney.

Elizabeth “Oscar” Maynard describes herself as ” a queer southern butch boi, from Carolina” She is a free-lance activist and artist who  attended Antioch College and majored in Art/Psych/Gender Studies.

Since 2006, stenciling has been her primary medium with a background in drawing, painting and photo.  She began an M.F.A program at SFAI Fall 2011.  She just finished a project titled Femme Agency, which looks at the way queer Femme women reclaim and complicate femininity.

She is invested in social justice movements, accountability and direct communication and these passions are woven into the work.  Conceptually, she is drawn to mapping narrative onto place, bodies, and cultural iconography. Narrative resonates with her because she is rooted in a Southern US cultural tradition of story-telling. She is eager to do work that ties history to location, and restores meaning to words or images that have evolved beyond their historical context or original meaning.
