Watercolors and Photographs by Alice Steele and Mixed Media Jewelry by Gabriele Schroder

Artist’s reception Saturday October 3, Noon – 5:00 PM.

The show begins with some fairly straightforward watercolor examples of colorful containers, interpreted on rice paper. Then it morphs into photography with more bright and shapely containers, this time interpreted to bring out interesting features. What is held in containers? Sometimes water. Now comes a wall of water. Here are delightful little macros of dancing and fanciful fluids. Finally there is a wall of just plain fun with abstract images that cover the rainbow of colors and challenge the imagination. Alice Steele’s work is truly a Color Carnival.

Gabriele Schroeder uses metal, wooden, bone, crystal, ceramic and hand-blown glass beads to create jewelry that rejoices in and celebrates women’s power and beauty. Her jewelry reminds all who wear it of their innate self-worth and beauty and their interdependence with the living spirit that pulses through all life on earth and sets us humans free to love and act graciously.

The show will be at the AWE Gallery the entire month of October (hours: Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 noon – 5:00 PM and by appointment. 415-731-6470)

Guest Artist, May 2009: Virginia Stella

“In Her Garden” – Drawings, Prints, Photography by Virginia Stella

As a child, I went to church on Sunday mornings and often roamed the galleries of the Cleveland Art Museum in the afternoon. Other Sundays I spent in the parks gathering pods and leaves to play with. My early interest in mysticism, art and plants all came together as an adult. I have been an artist of earth and sky for many years. I use drawing and printing mediums and photography. The sacredness and beauty of the natural world and the wonder of the life cycle inspires my work. I have studied art at Dominican University and the Pacific School of Religion. I am co-ordinator of art exhibits at Marin General Hospital.
