Guest Artists, September 2009: Irene Poon and Charles Wong

50 Years of Black and White from Chinese-American Perspectives

Renewed photojournalists Irene Poon and Charles Wong will be exhibiting at A Woman’s Eye Gallery for the month of September.

The Artists’ reception is Saturday September 12th from 12:00 noon – 5:00 PM. Both Charles Wong and Irene Poon were born in San Francisco’s Chinatown. In the 90s Poon became immersed in discovering Asian American art as well as confirming her identity as an Asian American artist. Poon was active many years with the Chinese Historical Society and served on its Board of Directors as well as curated shows celebrating Chinese American artists. Her book Leading the Way celebrates 25 Asian-American artists of the older generation, including SF Chinatown’s Dong Kingman and Jade Snow Wong. Both Irene Poon and Charles Wong were included in the recent De Young exhibit “Asian-American-Modern Art: Shifting Currents 1900-1970”. It was a welcomed return where they first exhibited in the 1950s and 1960s.

The show will be at the AWE Gallery the entire month of September (hours: Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 noon – 5:00 PM and by appointment. 415-731-6470)
