Take an idea, a subject, and explore and extend it as far as possible, into multiple works.  That artistic tradition is important to painters Pauline Crowther Scott and Susan Black.

Why?  Because there’s more than one way to look at anything – because each image seems to inspire another – and because it’s fun and satisfying.  Because the more one looks – at anything – the more one sees.  And the more one wants to paint!

In acrylics, color pencil, watercolor and pastel, Scott and Black present variations on some of their favorite themes.  From gardens to abstract patterns, horizons to hearts – they play with these ideas in all their depth and breadth, diversity and simplicity.

Pauline Crowther Scott’s recent series of works on paper is inspired by the leaves and flowers in her garden and nearby.  She uses a mixed-media and layered technique starting with a background wash of acrylics, followed by a stenciled layer, and finishes this off with color pencils to draw in the leaves and other motifs.

Susan Black’s new abstract paintings and drawings in watercolor, in pastel and in colored pencil focus on the inner landscape of the heart and the outer landscape of the horizon.
