Both Charles Wong and Irene Poon were born in  San Francisco\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s  Chinatown.  In the 90s Poon became immersed in discovering Asian  American art as well as confirming her identity as an Asian American  artist.  Poon was active many  years  with the Chinese Historical  Society and served on its Board of Directors as well as curated shows  celebrating Chinese American artists.  Her book Leading the Way  celebrates 25 Asian-American artists of the older generation, including  SF Chinatown\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Dong Kingman and Jade Snow Wong.  Both Irene Poon and Charles Wong were included in the recent De Young  exhibit \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Asian-American-Modern Art: Shifting Currents 1900-1970\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.
